December

December in Vienna is one of the coldest and darkest months of the year. The ancient city, though, is nevertheless busy with tourists in this holiday-filled month. With only two hours of daylight every day, temperatures consistently in the low forties and upper-thirties, and snow falling five to eight days over December, this is the best time to haul out your cold-weather gear.

Bring long thermal underwear, a heavy, windproof coat, a scarf, good gloves, comfortable, cold-weather-appropriate boots, earmuffs and a hat. If you find yourself out on the town, shopping for Christmas in one of the dozens of Christmas markets, and you’re getting a little too cold for comfort, there will be plenty of stalls selling mulled cider to warm you up.

The average high temperature in a Vienna December is º44 (F)/º3 (C). The average lows are º36/º-1, with an overall average temperature of º40/º1. Every December there are on average 20 days of precipitation and 5 days of snow.
