August is the hottest month in Vienna—both in terms of temperature and tourism. The city is packed with tourists in August—so packed and so hot that many of the locals flee to the surrounding countryside.

 

With temperatures occasionally reaching to above º80, you’ll want to bring a lot of warm weather clothes. The nights are pretty cool, though, so as always it’s a good idea to bring layers you can easily shed and put back on. Flip-flops are great for the Viennese August, especially since many of the places you’ll attend aren’t air-conditioned. This is also the month most likely to be visited by thunderstorms, so you’ll definitely want to keep an umbrella handy. This is the biggest month of the year for summer festivals, so be sure to have a hat and some sunblock.
