Photo: Winter in Vienna
In general, Vienna’s climate is rather mild in comparison to the rest of Austria, especially the alpine regions. It`s continental with oceanic influences; summers are fairly warm with temperatures ranging from the mid twenties to thirties (degrees Celsius) and winters rather cold with temperatures below zero. The median annual temperature is 9.9 degrees Celsius. Most precipitation is during the summer months, but in general it doesn’t rain too much in Vienna.
Throughout the year, there’s a lot of wind in Vienna, almost every day. While this can have a rather nice cooling effect in summer, when it gets really hot and stuffy in the small alleys and old buildings, windchill in winter is considerable. Don’t forget to bring a warm coat and, especially, a hat to cover your head and gloves- you’ll need them. Especially in winter warm clothes are essential, it gets quite cold here.
Weather changes greatly from season to season
A great thing about the climate in Vienna is the very distinctive change in seasons. Summers are hot, with mostly great weather and warm summer nights perfect for pulling all-nighters. It’s the perfect season to spend some time lying around in the sun in the parks, go swimming, or enjoy some coffee at one of the ubiquitous sidewalk cafés. Summer slowly and gently transcends into a warm, mild fall with bright blue skies, a gradual change of color of the leaves of the chestnut trees in Prater, and very enjoyable days for exploring the city. Winter then comes slowly, November is the least attractive month in the city, the bright colors of fall turn into a dreary gray, and the sky is mostly cloudy. There is some snow in winter but not too much, it usually doesn’t stay for too long and melts away quickly. It gets rather cold though and the cold winds add to the general experience of shattering teeth. Spring is very mild with great moments of sunshine and nature awakening after those long months of winter. The parks are presenting themselves in their greatest shape again and flowers are starting to bloom everywhere, while people are starting to loosen up greatly.
