Naschmarkt

Vienna’s biggest market is fittingly named “Grazing market“ because you come here and start grazing and nibbling at the different foods offered at the various stands. Go there when you’re hungry, you’ll want to try all the delicacies from all parts of the world and different kinds of fruit you might have never seen before. Take in the intense smells evaporating from the spice vendors stands that will take you to other places in an instant; curries reminiscent of India, the smell evaporating from chili pods that will make you sweat again like when you had that really spicy pot of Chili.
It’s also a wonderful location to watch the Viennese in their every-day environment. While the market is a tourist attraction, of course, locals love it likewise and still come here to shop for groceries or specialty foods you can’t get anywhere else, and for grazing a little, of course.
Of course, the market isn’t all about food. There are numerous flower vendors and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to do part of your souvenir shopping, as well. You can get textiles, wine, self-made soaps, and various assortments of tea and coffee to bring home from the “old world“, to give away or to keep for yourself.
Don’t plan to do your grocery shopping there, though, that’s rather pricey and would put a big dent in your budget. Stick to the “grazing“ to avoid that.
How to get there
Getting to Naschmarkt isn’t difficult. It’s located in the vicinity of a metro stop- U4 Kettenbrückengasse. It’s a pleasant walk from Karlsplatz (about 20 minutes) where U1 and U2 stop, as or from the Hofburg (about 30 minutes) that will allow for some nice views of the city.
Why go there
Food from all corners of the planet, delicious smells all over, and the opportunity to get some souvenir shopping done. Trying all the different delicacies is great fun, don’t miss out on that.
