Museumsquartier
While this massive cluster of museums is heaven for all museum, culture, and art addicts, there are still some things left to do for those a bit less enthusiastic about the idea of a museum marathon. It’s one of the world’s biggest spaces for art and culture and an interesting mix of baroque architecture (the building used to be the emperor’s stables) and modern features.
The MQ is home to a great number of art museums, such as the MUMOK, a museum of modern art, Leopold museum, where some modern art is exhibited as well, and Kunsthalle Wien, where contemporary art is shown. This is often accompanied by some installations on the outer wall of that particular museum.
If you’re interested in architecture, explore the Architekturzentrum a little. You can get some more information on the city’s architecture here, starting from the turn of the last century up to contemporary architecture.
MQ isn’t just about museums, though. There are numerous bars and cafés where you can hang out, spaces where “artists in residence“ can work, and a large number of shops where young designers sell their clothes, crafts, or whatever they have designed.
The best idea for starting your tour of the vast area is by getting some information and tickets at the Info Point that is at the central entrance of the MQ. The Info Point is also interesting itself- there’s a shop as well, where you can buy small, creative gifts and things. They also feature a different designer each month.
Throughout the year, there are several events at the MQ, according to season, that are advertised all over the city.
Why go there
MQ is unique in its concept and it`s hard to find such a high concentration of art, culture, and creativity in one location anywhere else.
