Hofburg

Vienna wouldn’t be Vienna without its rich history. After all, the city once was the capital of a mighty, extensive empire that stretched all the way down to the black sea. While the empire is gone, some of the splendor stayed, notably in the city’s architecture and representative buildings. The most impressive of all is the Hofburg. Even if you’re not a history buff, the size and grandeur of the building are quite breathtaking. Consider taking a tour, it is well worth it, the rooms are magnificent and it’s a good place to put a checkmark next to „do castle tour“ on your European trip to-do list, after all.
There are several other museums inside the castle, as well. The treasure chamber offers a glimpse on imperial jewels, silvers, and some other treasures of the church. It’s similar to having a look at the crown jewels in the tower of London. While it’s impressive, don’t go there unless you’re truly interested in the insignia of the royals.
Another museum in the area, is the Sisi museum, a museum about (arguably) the most famous Austrian empress. She is Austria’s Lady Diana. Yet, it’s only worth it when you’re interested in princess paraphernalia.
Take some time to wander around the castle grounds, as well. They are well kept and very beautiful in the summer. There’s also a butterfly garden inside a steel and glass greenhouse.
Why you should go
The size, splendor, and excessive use of gold and marble speak for themselves. It’s rather impressive and offers an interesting insight into Austria’s history.
How to get there
The castle is located in the central 1st district. There are several possibilities to get there. Take U3 and get off at any of these stations and walk a little: Stephansplatz (closest), Herrengasse (closest to the central square in front of the castle), Volkstheater (walk across the ring and head straight up along all the empiral buildings). Also accessible with U1 at Stephansplatz. Pretty much any stop in the first district will get you within a 15 minutes walking distance.
