Airport

Schwechat, the only airport, is located quite far away from the city centre. It’s medium in size and easy to navigate. There aren’t any surprises there. While there are some possibilities to eat within the airport, in case you’re really hungry, try to eat before passing the security checks. There’s nothing cheap nor exciting there. The cheapest option within the airport building is a Billa supermarket that is well-stocked and reasonably priced.

Getting to and from the airport

You can get to the airport in three different ways, using the CAT (City airport train), airport bus, or public transportation. The fastest option is the CAT, the cheapest is using public transport exclusively.

City airport trains leave from Landstraße (Wien Mitte) Station and go to the airport none-stop every half hour. The journey takes 16 minutes and costs 9 Euros one-way.

The same journey with public transportation takes 24 minutes from Landstraße (Wien Mitte) Station and costs 3,40 Euros one-way. It’s on line S7, a local train that stops at several stations along the way.

Taking the CAT doesn’t really make much sense, unless you’re in an exceptional hurry or have difficulties walking since you have to take several flights of stairs to get to station from where the trains stop for the city. CAT provides for a better access for handicapped people.

The third option is to take a bus with Vienna Airport Lines company from Westbahnhof, Schwedenplatz, or UNO city metro stations. All journeys are 6 Euros one-way, 11 Euros round-trip, and take about 25-35 minutes to get to the airport. Calculate some extra time for traffic jams and try to not take the latest bus possible.

Note that none of the lines operate during nighttime and that you need to plan your journey to the airport considering this. Otherwise you might end up having to take an expensive taxi.
